After being one of the last airlines to let customers check a bag for free, JetBlue is now raising its prices for all checked baggage. The first checked bag is now $30, up from $25, making it one of the highest fees in the industry. A second checked bag fee has also been raised by $5 to $40, while a third checked back will cost $150, up from $100.

JETBLUE BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE

The JetBlue carry-on allowance includes one carry-on bag no bigger than 22 x 14 x 9 in (55.88 x 35.56 x 22.86 cm), plus one personal item, which must not exceed 17 x 13 x 8 in (43.2 x 33 x 20.32 cm).

If a passenger’s carry-on bag does not fit in the overhead locker, the bag will be checked at the gate.

JETBLUE CARRY ON FOR CHILDREN

There is no JetBlue baggage allowance for infants sitting on an adult’s lap. However, the accompanying adult may bring a diaper bag, pushchair and car seat for the child, as well as their own carry-on items.

JETBLUE CARRY ON AND MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

A musical instrument can be brought on board as carry on provided it fits within the overhead lockers (standard carry-on dimensions do not apply). If an instrument does not fit, an extra seat can be purchased for it. The instrument must weigh no more than 165 lbs and it must be placed in a window seat.

JETBLUE CARRY ON AND BRINGING PETS ON BOARD

Certain domestic pets can be brought on board the aircraft, and placed, in their carrier, under the seat in front. Passengers are allowed to bring only one pet on board, and a maximum of four pets may be present on board a flight. A pet must be in a carrier with dimensions that do not exceed 17 x 12.5 x 8.5 in. The combined total weight of the pet and its carrier must not be greater than 20 lbs. A carrier counts as one carry-on item. The fee for bringing a pet on board is $125, one way.

Certain items are considered too dangerous to be carried on board an aircraft. These include:

JETBLUE CHECKED BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE

1 x 50 lbs (22.68 kg); maximum dimensions of 62 inches (157.48 cm), free on Blue Plus and Blue Flex fares; $30 on Blue fares. A second checked bag costs $40 on Blue and Blue Plus fares (free with Blue Flex), and a third, or any additional bag, costs $150.

Mint fare passengers are allowed two checked bags up to 70 lbs (31.7 kg) each.

JETBLUE CHECKED BAGGAGE AND EXCESS BAGGAGE FEES

If a bag is over the weight permitted by JetBlue’s checked baggage allowance, $150 per bag will be charged.

If a bag is oversized, the charge is also $150.

No bag larger than 80 in or heavier than 99 lbs will be accepted.

If a bag is both overweight and oversized, the two fees will apply.

JETBLUE CHECKED BAGGAGE AND EXCEPTIONAL ITEMS

Exceptional items, such as sports equipment, are accepted as checked luggage, and often without additional fees being charged. You will not be required to pay extra to check a golf bag, for example, as long as it does not exceed weight limitations. Bicycles, however, generally incur a fee of $100, one way. Overweight baggage fees will not be charged for bikes, but they must not exceed 99 lbs.

Musical instruments may be checked into the hold as desired, and count as one item of checked luggage. No additional fees are charged for musical instruments, provided they are within size and weight restrictions.

Adding bags and paying baggage fees

You can indicate how many bags you’re bringing and pay the applicable fees during the check-in process within 24 hours of your flight’s departure. We recommend checking in online or at one of our airport kiosks, although there is no difference in fees whether checking in online, at a kiosk or at the check-in counter.

If you check in online, just drop your bags at the bag drop location at the airport where a crewmember will scan your boarding document to see your payment, verify the bag count and weight, and print your bag tag(s). Overweight and oversized fees may apply, so be sure to pack in accordance with our checked baggage requirements by visiting jetblue.com/baggage.

Cuba

  • Each customer may check a total of five (5) bags or boxes/plastic bins. During the winter peak period (November 16th – January 15th) customers may not check in more than three (3) bags and may not check ANY boxes/plastic bins.
  • Each bag/box/plastic bin must NOT exceed 80 inches (203.2 centimeters) in overall dimensions (length + width + height) or CANNOT exceed 99 pounds (44.9 kilograms).
  • Cardboard boxes must be factory sealed.
  • Checked bags/boxes/plastic bins that are up to 50 pounds (22.73 kilos) or 62 inches (157.48 centimeters) in overall dimensions (length + width + height) will be accepted for check in. Overweight and/or oversize baggage fees will be applied.

Dominican Republic, Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago

  • Each customer may check a total of two (2) bags.
  • Each bag must NOT exceed 62 inches (157.48 centimeters) in overall dimensions (length + width + height) and CANNOT exceed 50 pounds (22.73 kg). Baggage dimensions are determined by adding together the length, width, and height.
  • Additional bags, and bags that exceed the overall dimensions or weight, WILL NOT be allowed on board flights to/from the Dominican Republic*, Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago.
    • *Additional bags will be accepted on flights to/from La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Peru

Each customer may check a total of two (2) bags. Each bag must NOT exceed 62 inches (157.48 centimeters) in overall dimensions (length + width + height) and CANNOT exceed 70 pounds (31.75 kg). Overweight bag fees will apply to bags weighing over 50 pounds (22.73 kg).

Boxes, televisions and liability

Televisions must be packaged in their original, factory-sealed box.

Please note that cardboard boxes/plastic bins WILL NOT be allowed on any international flight except for flights to/from Cuba. Non-hazardous items may be packed in checked bags. Humanitarian organizations transporting supplies will be subject to the same baggage allowances and guidelines as other customers.

As a reminder, televisions are NOT accepted on international flights, with a unique exception for flights to/from Cuba.

Checking in your bags

  • All bags must be checked in at the airport at least 40 minutes prior to departure on domestic flights, and 60 minutes prior to departure on international flights.
  • If you are traveling to an international destination, please check in at the ticket counter.
  • Bags will NOT be accepted for check in more than six hours prior to a flight’s scheduled departure time.
  • Please check information specific to items such as sporting equipment, firearms, musical instruments, etc. for guidelines on transporting them on JetBlue flights.

Checking bags for someone other than yourself

Each customer must check their own bag with the exception that one member of a family traveling on the same reservation can check the luggage for the family by providing a valid, government issued photo ID. we cannot accept checked bags on the aircraft unless the customer who checked the bag is aboard the aircraft.
Overweight, oversized bags and excess bags

Overweight, oversized, and excess bags may be checked on a load-availability basis, per the guidelines detailed below. Please note, fees will be assessed for each category that applies.

  • Example #1 – if a bag is overweight and oversized, the overweight fee plus the oversized fee will apply.
  • Example #2 – if a bag is the third bag and is also overweight and oversized, the three additional fees (overweight, oversized, excess bag) will be assessed.

Charges for excess, oversize, and overweight bags will be assessed and collected at the airport upon check in.
